American Art Catalogues Presentation

Sketchbooks & Drawings, 2019 – 2026 Rita Ackermann

American Art Catalogues presents Rita Ackermann: Sketchbooks & Drawings, 2019–2026, an exhibition comprising three original sketchbooks and a group of related drawings produced between 2019 and 2026.

The sketchbooks, published as facsimile editions by American Art Catalogues in 2021, occupy a central position within Ackermann's practice. Neither preparatory documents nor discrete bodies of work, they constitute a continuous site of inquiry where image, gesture, and composition remain in a state of perpetual revision. The drawings included in the exhibition emerge from the same period and may be understood as extensions of the sketchbooks themselves: alternate sequences, excised pages, or expanded fragments that exceed the physical limits of the bound volumes.

Presented together, the exhibition offers an opportunity to view the original objects alongside related works on paper, revealing the movement between private notation and autonomous image that characterizes Ackermann's approach to drawing.

Over the past nine years, American Art Catalogues has published seven volumes by Ackermann. This is the artist’s first presentation with American Art Catalogues.

Rita Ackermann was born in Budapest and lives and works in New York.
