Lionel Wendt
Lionel Wendt (1900–1944) was a Sri Lankan photographer, pianist, and cultural patron who played a pivotal role in the development of modernist art in colonial Ceylon. A central figure in the Colombo ’43 Group, Wendt promoted modernist aesthetics through his photography and through his support of emerging Sri Lankan artists. His photographic work—often experimental and influenced by European modernism—remains a foundational contribution to the history of South Asian photography and visual culture.
